Field Report: Seals in Long Island Sound

From the journal, November 29th: "We are heading out on Long Island Sound today in search of seals that have migrated from the Gulf of Maine and Canada to spend the winter in the relatively warmer waters of Long Island Sound. Low tide is around 3:00, sun is shining and wind almost non existent. Seas should be calm and seals should be sun bathing on the rocks."

Assateague Island

At 5:30 a.m. we were off to the southern part of Assateague Island. It is a barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia, and as such, a storm recently ravaged the island with wind speeds up to 70 mph. The island itself, a National Park, just reopened to the public but with limited access. The gate to the park opens automatically at 6:00 a.m. and we were second in line to go across to the island.
